It almost seems too obvious to be worth saying, but music artists need their fans a lot more than their fans need them. Too many artists quickly forget this, but Amanda Palmer is not one of them.
Ever since making her name in the Dresden Dolls, she has put her fans right at the heart of what she does and uses the internet and social media better in that respect than almost anyone you could name.
Her Twitter feed is a joy to behold, full of searing honesty, good vibes and positive body images (evidenced by the recent ‘Photoshop This’ series of photos, where fans tweeted photos of their lumpy bits and scars), while she’s got an IoS app that has its own community that seems free of the bitchiness and in-fighting you’d get in such places normally.
When she wants to get a new video done or new music released, she’s only got to ask and there’s volunteers willing to Kickstart it or Pledge for it, and her live shows are as collaborative as any you’ll see. Even those where she doesn’t ask fans to write on her naked body.
She’s currently touring her fantastic recent album Theatre Is Evil with backing group The Grand Theft Orchestra and is playing the following UK shows. Tickets are either gone or almost gone, so think fast and act faster, otherwise you really will be missing out.
