One of the worst things about Twitter is when you see one of your heroes is trending and you can’t think of a reason why, other than that they might have died. And so it is with Gil Scott-Heron, one of the all-time greatest musician-poets and an inspiration on pretty much every half-decent rap or soul artist to have followed him.
He lived a hard life, largely because of his own frailties and bad decisions, but happily he enjoyed a renaissance towards the end with last year’s I’m New Here album getting critical acclaim and seeing him back on the road again. I really wish I’d had the chance to see him perform, but at least I’ve got his recordings, a lifetime of genius laid down for the ages. The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, but Gil Scott-Heron will definitely be missed.
