What is your favourite song of all time?
Billie Jean by Michael Jackson.
Can you remember when you fell in love with it?
1984 when MJ performed it at the Grammys. I think this was the case for a lot of people. First time I saw the “Moonwalk”. It’s never left me. I watched it over and over again as i had taped it on our beta video! The song still sounds fresh today.
Has a song or album ever changed your life?
There are albums that are part of huge chapters of my life. Massive Attack “Protection” and Portishead “Dummy” were my albums at drama school, the most exciting time in my life and so always take me back to that feeling. Alanis Morissette “Jagged Little Pill” will forever be my first real heartbreak album after having been dumped. I think that’s a given for anyone heartbroken in the mid/late nineties.
If you could only listen to five albums for the rest of time, what would they be?
- Purple Rain
- Off The Wall
- Songs in the Key of Life
- The biggest Nina Simone compilation I could possibly find!
How much of your day do you spend listening to music?
It depends really. I listen constantly in the car and prefer the radio after 7pm on long drives home for the speciality shows whether they are jazz or folk or country. I like dance music stations too on long drives. Just depends on my mood. i listen to BBC radio6 when I’m cooking, which is often! i listen to my own iPod at the gym and i play stuff from my own collection if we have friends over or if i suddenly think of something i want to hear. I listen to music a lot. If I’m not listening to music then I’m usually creating my own or rehearsing my own!
What’s your ideal time and place for listening to music?
Anytime. I did used to like just getting an album when i was working away from home and just sitting with headphones on and listening from beginning to end of that record. I’d rather do that, than watch television on my own.
What’s the best gig/show you’ve ever been to?
There are three standouts. I saw Michael Jackson at Wembley when I was 13, The Bad Tour -1988, that will forever stay in my memory! I was speechless when he came on; I tried to scream but nothing came out. I have the photo somewhere to prove it. It was a surprise birthday present. Recently though I saw Fleetwood Mac at the O2 and they absolutely blew me away. Then there’s another favourite of mine, a jazz duo, ‘Tuck & Patti” who are the reason I found a gateway into jazz. I saw them at The Union chapel in London and they had me in tears, it was that beautiful.
Approximately how big is your music collection? And in what format?
Approximately 800 albums, I know this because I spent two whole weeks importing my CDs to my MacBook as they took up too much space. I have it all on an iPod. I’ve kept my most favourite CDs for my car and got rid of the rest. But I’ve just begun to collect vinyl now. It’s nice to have and sounds different on a record player, less bass too which is good on a night as we have a baby! I can’t believe i got rid of all my vinyl from when I was young. But hey ho. I hope I won’t be saying that in 15 years time about my CD collection…
What does music mean to you?
Soul, energy, fun, memories, entertainment – imagine a world without music, it sounds so twee but seriously, imagine it – ugh!
What song should we all go and listen to right now to make our day better?
Nina Simone – Sinnerman. All the way through. It’s long. It makes me proper giddy.
