Continuing my Albums Of The Year countdown…
7 – Elton John & Leon Russell – The Union
Elton John’s music output since the turn of the century has been remarkably good for someone who spent the previous two decades mostly churning out lazy drivel, and The Union is his best of the bunch, helped by the songwriting and warm crackly vocals of the great Leon Russell (and Brian Wilson and Neil Young), as well the lyrical Americana that served him so well back on Tumbleweed Connection.
8 – Neil Young – Le Noise
It’s typical of Neil Young’s long and winding career that he has followed one of his least well-received albums with one of his best. Hooking up with Daniel Lanois for an album of just his shaky voice and his shaky guitar filtered through the producer’s trademark sound, Young’s on top form here and Le Noise marks another real highlight from a true master.
